Jess Porter is a hard working mum of two, who grew up in Brighouse in West Yorkshire. She has spent the majority of her working life in sales, selling a variety of things including children toys so has a good idea of what children appreciate. She took up writing purely by chance when she came up with the idea for the YumYums. It was created on the way home from a family outing. When going through the remains of a picnic she decided to name leftover pieces of fruit and vegetables to amuse her children. It was from this that the YumYums were born. The very next day she started to pen her first story and draw the pictures to go with it. It soon became apparent that this could be a very good way to introduce children to fruit and vegetables that they may not be aware of and also to educate everyone to the various health benefits. Jess also wanted to include a ‘moral’ in each story but put across in a fun way to keep children entertained. She also saw this as a vehicle to help others and signed an agreement with the Meningitis Research Foundation. She is donating a percentage of her royalties to the charity, which has a particular closeness to Jess after her niece contracted the illness. Through tireless hard work Jess is hoping to help support the 5-a-day message and to help other people wherever she can, with help from the YumYums !
